THE FOOSBALL TOURNAMENT

Eileen: Would Maxine or Shawn ever let you miss class for a foosball tournament?

Of course, both Dale and I answered no to that, but nonetheless, we were off the hook. Although she said she was disappointed, photography instructor Eileen Leier said she would allow us to show up to photography class late tonight. While at first we were excited about entering a team in the tournament, by our last game we just wanted to get out of there. Dale and I finished a woeful 0-5, and our closest defeat was a 10-5 loss. To say these players were good is an understatement.
The tournament, made up of 11 teams, was split in two divisions, one with six teams and one with five. The division we were placed in made no difference to us, we just wanted to play. Meghan, being the trooper she is, also hung around at Heroes to cheer us on and to miss the first half of photography of course.

There will be more festivities as the week progresses, and I plan on attending a few. Some other activities as part of the CSS Winter Fair include a CD Toss, Lacrosse, a Hotdog Eating Contest (Silv told me he could top 20, but won't enter for no reason), Ping Pong, Video Hockey Tournaments, an Obstacle Course and Tug-O-War.

MY READING WEEK IN PRINCE GEORGE

This has to be the most slack Reading Break I've ever had. And that's saying a lot because I'm a very lazy person. I'm the type who will do absolutely anything aside from schoolwork and will avoid responsibility at all costs possible. This week I've spend a lot of time sitting on my ass, whether it be playing video games, watching movies, watching TV or browsing the internet. I just laughed to myself after reading the e-mails sent from journalism professeurs like "good luck with your reading" and "remember to have this/that done for next week" and "I hope you're getting a lot accomplished." Give me a break! Maybe if there was a class about sports video games I would have an 'A'. As I continue slacking off I daze and wonder to myself how many j-students are really utilizing their week off to catch up on schoolwork. Probably quite a few. It's easy to recognize that some students in our program have no life outside journalism. But then again, maybe I should be more like them.

Although I've done a bit of walking, for the most part I've lacked in exercise. The mild weather has only ruined my plans of organizing a big game of pond hockey. I brought my skates up in all only to see temperatures hit highs of 5 degrees in the middle of the week. The ice up here is probably as bad as the ice in Kamloops the last time I played. The weather has been brutal - cold enough that there's too much slush and snow to play any summer sport, but too warm to play pond hockey. As far as snowboarding, I never even brought my board up and never intended to do that anyways.

I've played a lot of NBA Live 2004 the last couple days, and I have to say I wasn't dissapointed. As far as sports games go, this one is a beauty. The game play is awesome, and I also really like the graphics, commentary, and 'easy to use' controls. It took me one game to figure everything out. Now I'm draining three balls, finishing alley oops, and pulling 360 slam dunks like I own the damn court. I've been cleaning the floor with Roberto the last few games.

COUGARS 6 BLAZERS 3

What a great WHL game at the Prince George Multiplex last night. Well, if you're a PG Cougars fan it was. The Cougars led 2-1 in the first period and exploded for three unanswered second period goals on their way to a 6-3 victory over Kamloops. Blazers bench boss Dean Clark had this to say in the Prince George Citizen.

"(The Cougars) are playing fearless right now, knowing they don't have a spot, and we're playing tentative. Not scared, tentative...waiting for something bad to happen instead of making something positive happen."

NHL scouts were present at this game to watch young star goaltenders Devan Dubnyk and Justin Pogge in action. Unfortunately for Dubnyk, his sub-par performace earned him a spot on the Blazers bench Eric Hunter scored the Cougars fourth goal to put them up 4-1. Dubnyk slapped the boards in frustration from the bench after a performance he'd rather forget.

I went to the game with Roberto and Roger Masse, a friend of mine I've known since Foothills Elementary School. To our surprise there wasn't even one fight. PG native Paul Brown didn't even drop the gloves all game although with tonight being the second game of the doubleheader there should be some fireworks. Tonights game, more important last last nights game, can really determine the Cougars fate. If they win again tonight, they're tied with Kootenay for the final playoff spot, and just one point behind the Blazers.

COMING TO A CLOSE

It's my last day in PG and I guess after a very relaxing Reading Break it's time to get down to business. I'm taking an early 8:45 a.m. bus out of here tomorrow, and should arrive in Kamloops in the late afternoon sometime. While I wish I would have accomplished a little more, I did what I sought out to do - I used the week to forget about school. Now it's time I think about it again. But not tonight I won't. After all, it's Saturday night tonight!

ANOTHER CRAZY WEEKEND

Man, I had a feeling I'd end up going out this past weekend. Yup, I was right. With the amount of 'going out' I did in St. John's, you'd think I'd take a break. But this weekend there was just too much to pass up. It started with another classic college night at Heroes Pub. It really wasn't that busy there. I contribute this to the fact that it was snowing a lot that night. We just get back from seeing tonnes of the white stuff in Newfoundland and then we're welcomed back to Kamloops by the same stuff. Nonetheless, it was still a good showing.

I should have had something to eat prior to going out because the alcohol hit me on Thursday night, not too hard, just harder than I would have preferred. Our team's trivia skills didn't exist during the contest. Questions that we should have got right we didn't because we didn't hear it properly. We figured having Meghan enter the dance contest would give us a legitimate shot at winning that, but it just wasn't meant to be. She had to compete with people stripping, and two girls making out on the floor. Ah, yeah right. Meghan, Jessica and I went to Magnums afterwards to check it out. There wasn't really much to see. The place was totally empty. But I did meet a girl from Newfoundland which was really cool, but I never got her name. I told her about my trip and we shared a few laughs.

ROCK TRIVIA AND THE LATIN PARTY

On Friday night I went to both Rock Trivia at Heroes and the Latin Party. It was a fun night, although we only got second in Rock Trivia. Although we knew he was valuable, our disappointing result at the last Rock Trivia proved the importance of Scott Trudeau to our team. The 80's Lightning Round had the most bizarre mix of tunes that even Scott couldn't label.

Following Rock Trivia I hung out at Fred's place, and Auren took out his list of nearly every J-schooler and we made some phone calls. After some of that, we hung out at Heroes, and we headed over to Forsters for the Latin Party, and Scott went home. There were a lot of J-schoolers at Forsters, including Christina, Dani, Auren, Chris, Carlos, Fred, Ally, Kinga, Zaki, and myself. Also present were Christina's boyfriend Arne, Dani's roommate Sam, T-Bird and others.

Sam was drinking like a fish, later telling me he spent $75 there, and buying girls drinks as well. I figured my night wasn't going as planned when I started meeting more guys than girls. Ouch! At the end of the night we left to the spectacle of some guy passed out on the street who needed help to get back inside. To the rescue was Sam who, along with a few others, helped the man back on his feet.

SUPER BOWL 38

I can't believe it's Super Bowl 38 today! Steve Smith just caught a TD pass to tie the game against New England. The score is now 7-7 with only a minute left before halftime. For me, the Super Bowl has always been about the Halftime Show. One particular halftime show that I remember as being one of the best was a few years ago when Aerosmith teamed up with Britney Spears and Nelly to do their own rendition of Walk This Way. It was pretty good. Although this isn't the way I initially planned to watch the Super Bowl, I'm watching it from inside the journalism lab at UCC.
